Hugo's Bistro - Shortland Street, Auckland CBD

After admiring the beautiful Hugo's Bistro from afar for the last couple of months, on Tuesday I finally had the opportunity to dine there. Coming from the same owner's as the successful Odette's Eatery, Hugo's was bound to be a hit.  Nestled on the upper half of Shortland Street, this beautiful all-day eatery provides the perfect spot for meeting for a drink and a bite to eat at any time of day.

Hugo's although much smaller than Odette's in size, provides a more intimate dining experience, enhanced by the open kitchen which can be seen clearly from any seat in the room. The interior of Hugo's is just stunning. I particularly loved the beautiful marble floors, the hanging lights and the stunning art behind the coffee machine.

My sister and I had some shopping to do in the city, so Hugo's was the ideal spot for brunch. We started with coffees and then continued by ordering off the 'Earlier' menu. Hugo's uses their own special coffee blend, and it is just delicious! I love the small coffee cups the "small whites" come in, it's seems to be just larger than a piccolo but still enough to satisfy those morning coffee cravings.

The menu is quite different in term of the way the dishes are listed. Rather than having an actual name for each dish, Hugo's simply lists the key ingredients of each meal. For example, I ordered the 'coconut yoghurt, tamarillo, granola' ($14) and my sister ordered the 'roast peppers, eggs, goat cheese, gf bread' ($19) with a side of bacon ($7).

We both absolutely loved our meals. My meal (the coconut yoghurt etc.) was the perfect portion size for a breakfast and kept me full for the whole morning. However rather than the meal being mainly granola topped with yoghurt and tamarillo, the coconut yoghurt is the main feature of this dish with, so if you're not a big fan of coconut yoghurt I probably wouldn't recommend ordering this.

My sister really enjoyed her meal too, apparently she "couldn't fault it." She particularly loved how the gluten free bread and goats cheese tasted together and she highly recommends adding the side of bacon to the dish.

Overall the experience at Hugo's was just incredible. The food, coffee, service and atmosphere in this new eatery is top of the line and I can't wait to go back soon and try the 'Later' menu. If you're looking for a place to dine in the inner city look no further.
